Najib’s Sledgehammer Approach To The Bersih Rally

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 06:05 PM PDT

Malaysia Chronicle
By Matthias Chang

Prime Minister Najib will be the ultimate loser in the coming General Election and will be ousted just like his predecessor, Tun Abdullah Badawi.

There are four main factions in UMNO, three of which are determined to prevent the PM's faction from gaining an overwhelming upper-hand and a repetition of "Pak Lah's political theatrics" – when the family, in-laws included ruled supreme.

This is so typical of "Malay politics". Can you imagine the wannabes waiting for 15 years or more to have a bite at the political cherry?

The era of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was an exception and only because he was a visionary and a pragmatic leader, and an act that is hard to follow. The trend for all future leaders will assuredly be one term, as there are just too many in the queue to be the next prime minister.

The Prime Minister is a seasoned politician, adept at surviving the back-stabbing and double-dealings inherent in all political power-grabs. So why is he reacting in such a high-handed manner to the Bersih challenge?

A heavy-handed reaction – threats of incarceration under the Internal Security Act, threats of unleashing sectarian / racial violence by the likes of Perkasa, the unnecessary posturing by UMNO Youth and its irrelevant leader, Khairy (off to join the Gaza Flotilla to get some brownie points where he has no credibility in advancing the just struggles of the Palestinians), the raid of Bersih's office and the confiscation of its materials etc., but no police action against UMNO Youth's disorderly conduct outside PKR's headquarters even when they threatened to burn down the building – indicates the administration's one track mentality in solving problems, not that the Bersih Rally is a problem.

The hype and exaggeration of the consequences of the Bersih Rally – civil commotion, financial losses in the RM billions, the takeover of the government, the revival of communism etc. – is another symptom of an administration under siege and devoid of any creative response to what is otherwise a non-issue.

To declare that it is a crime and or illegal to wear any clothing in yellow bearing the logo "Bersih" is sheer stupidity. And the Home Minister is a lawyer by training! If such clampdown is to demonstrate the power of UMNO and nothing else, then the year long campaign that we are "1Malaysia" rings hollow and that the Barisan Nasional government has no faith in its policies especially its "Economic Transformation Programme" (ETP), the political crown jewel of Najib's dministration.

If Barisan Nasional needs brute force to cow the people to vote for it, as opposed to using rational arguments and sound policies, it will be the end of the Barisan Nasional. The Barisan Nasional would be giving the Opposition a walk over in the next General Election.

The Election Commission is an independent agency. This is the mantra that the BN government never ceases to affirm.

Everyone is for a free and fair election.

The 2008 General Election is the best evidence that elections were conducted fairly, as the Opposition took over five state governments and reduced the BN two-thirds majority in Parliament, a historic achievement by the Opposition Coalition.

Bersih has assured the nation that the rally would be peaceful and its intention is to deliver a memorandum for a fair and clean election to the King. We shall hold them to their word and promise.

How long would the Bersih Rally be, in the absence of any police action? At the most, one and half hours, and thereafter, they would have to disperse, again peacefully. End of the story. Nothing happens, no news worthy of a headline in the front page of the local mainstream media or for that matter the foreign media.

The police can agree to a pre-designated route to avoid creating traffic jams and unnecessary inconvenience to the public.

There is no need for the deployment of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) or the military. What is needed is traffic police to assist the organizers.

This is all that is required.

Any leader associated with the Bersih Rally would lose credibility if they allow the rally to turn ugly or violent. In those circumstances, the security forces would have every justification to take stern action and they can be deployed quickly.

Let us not make a mountain out of a mole-hill!

My advice to the Prime Minister is simple. Be at the gate of the Agong's palace to stand in solidarity with the participants and show support for their civic-mindedness and assure all those peaceful participants that every effort will be made to ensure a fair and clean election as was the case in 2008 and all previous elections.

Why is there a need for Perkasa to have a counter-rally, when it is not even part of the Barisan Nasional? Whether BN likes it or not, Perkasa is perceived as being thuggish and provocative. It may have a role in serving a Malay agenda (rallying Malays to vote for UMNO), but it will not be able to deliver the Malay votes. It is a sad reflection of UMNO that it needs Perkasa, an external force to rally Malay voters and when its leader is not even a member of UMNO, but an "independent" Member of Parliament. This is really pathetic!

Why must UMNO Youth behave in a manner that is perceived as racial and repugnant?

Perkasa undermines the Barisan Nasional. It cannot deliver on its own merits and has no mass following, if UMNO members do not join its ranks.

I challenge Perkasa to deliver 50,000 members to march peacefully to the Agong's palace to assure the entire nation that they too are for fair and clean elections, not on the 9th July 2011 but on a separate occasion so that we can see for ourselves the true strength of Perkasa and whether it genuinely reflects the aspirations of the Malay community and the Barisan Nasional.

If Barisan Nasional wants to commit suicide and lose the next General Election, then follow Perkasa's sectarian bravado and Khairy's infantile opportunism.

If Barisan Nasional insists on adopting the sledge hammer approach to the Bersih Rally, they will lose the next election. The blowback will be intense and unforgiving. And if Najib is naïve and foolish enough to declare an emergency and launch another Operation Lalang, the Chinese and Indian voters will abandon Barisan Nasional in droves and whatever efforts thus far to win back their allegiance will go up in smoke. This is a given.

Remember also that as a Muslim country, we are also a target of the neo-cons' agenda. Those outside forces who are hell bent to destabilize Muslim countries are waiting for an excuse to subvert Malaysia.

The Bersih Rally is a non-issue and can be diffused quietly and without any fanfare.

I trust common sense will prevail.

Sistem Baru SPR Terus Lindungi Pengundi Hantu

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 05:51 PM PDT

Malaysiakini

Khutbah Kecam Bersih Seret Masjid Dalam Politik, Kata Penganalisis

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 05:44 PM PDT

Malaysian Insider

"Kita semua tahu Umno-BN takut perhimpunan Bersih.

SAh!!!! SPR Menipu..!! Kami Sudah Buktikan!!!

Beberapa pengunjung Malaysiakini berkata.....

"Why should the EC be worried about Pakatan Rakyat taking over Putrajaya? EC deputy chairperson Wan Ahmad Wan Omar, are you a stooge of the BN? The EC should be an impartial. Wan Ahmad should not be taking sides. What is wrong with Pakatan's goal of taking over Putrajaya? All politicians want to be in power. Our only request is that the EC conduct elections fairly.- Anonymous_4031

So what if Bersih is a stooge for Pakatan - EC has been known to be a stooge for BN all these years. Bersih's demands are the result of EC's non-performance in tying up the loose ends.-
Anonymous_3e97

The EC has been playing the stooge for Umno for too long a time that it is now beyond the capability of the EC chief to fathom anything that is independent. Since Bersih is not beholden to Umno, so naturally Wan Ahmad would come to the conclusion that Bersih is a Pakatan cat's paw.- DannyLoHH

cheers.

Reserve Bank of Australia “Dirty Money” arrests: Can MACC confirm whether husband of alleged “high official of Bank Negara” a possible party to bribery scandal?

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 01:20 PM PDT

The above story connected with Securency International as well as Reserve Bank of Australia is big news as, apparently, the "Arrests follow a long-running investigation into Reserve Bank money-makers …"

It is getting bigger now because a follow-up story had been headlined thus: "Bank bribes: more arrests imminent"

But this news could get even bigger if an investigation into the alleged Malaysian-connection of this scandal had been carried out and proven to have some traction. The call for our MACC to investigate the allegation of a possible Malaysian-side involvement was proposed, I think, sometime on 22 July 2010.
If my memory serves me right, I believe it was a so-called 'leaper of a KL MP,' so labelled by his former political party members, to do so in his blog. He wrote something to this effect: That at the time he had received rumours that "the husband of a very high official in BNM is strongly implicated…."

Like I said, if my memory is still intact, this same so-called ' leaper of a KL MP' whose constituency is famous for a jalan (or road) associated with Genting Klang probably had included this paragraph: "… As a matter of national interest, I urge the MACC to immediately conduct a more thorough investigation locally so that we can take steps to quickly salvage our reputaion should the alleged corrupt practice, as reported, is less than accurate…." or something like that.

So naturally my question to MACC would be: Did you conduct an investigation and ascertain that no such 'corrupt practice' had transpired and that nothing was swept under the carpet to cover up?

Maybe MACC had forgotten to look into this matter just as the same so-called 'leaper of a KL MP" had forgotten to follow up on this matter – as I don't remember hearing or coming across any reported piece of him having done so. This seeming lack of "national interest" responsibility could be due to a probable advance debilitation of a physical nature or whatever. Or it could be just plain simple forgetfulness due to the likelyhood of having celebrated too many birthdays.

Either way, MACC and this so-called 'leaper of a KL MP' are both at fault. Most, I believe, like to refer to it as 'dereliction of duty.'

Blind Bloke Christian and His Agenda

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 11:44 AM PDT

There are Christian blokes who believe that if they perform their religious rituals they are happy with their relationship with their Maker without any cares about the real world.

And one shining example if reports are true about this Christian by the name of Tony who has made a police report against another Christian? by the name of Chan Julian for posting a religious sedition in her tweet. Apparently this sin to him us greater than sinning God when she tweeted 'i think all Christians shud march for all the persecution they had done to us and our Lord. Don't you think so?'

As a Christian I should praise the Lord that his brader Tony is a faithful discipline who has been able to pray to his God in his words, " I am a Christians and practised my faith freely, no persecution ever happen while I'm practising my faith, as Lilian try to portrays with her tweetpost."

One isn't sure what his agenda is making a police report against a thought process... 'I think'

But isn't his statement "She made it up with another agenda up in her mind", is also similar to him thinking that is what she had in mind.

So what makes Lilian's 'think' a religious sedition and isn't his thinking she has an agenda is similarly making a false accusation and sinful one too against a fello Christian, huh?

One isn't sure what Christian this bloke is and Tony isn't a Christian name per se. Perhaps it's an England name he is fond of, eh?

One also isn't sure what this bloke blogger of Blog House Malaysia understands by persecution. Perhaps he is a student of Church history and persecution to him is when Christianity first started, the crucifixion, burning on stakes, killing of anyone who claimed to be a Christian or in modern times being flogged or, jailed in China for not bowing down to state appointed religion and religious priests.

So what is his definition of persecution us Christians would like to know?

Perhaps his God only understands English and he has no fear praying in the English language and needn't have to pray in other languages like Bahasa Melayu that uses the 'A' name for God and can land Christians on this side of Malaysia to be breaking the law, huh?

Perhaps he isn't a blogger who reads about bigots who accuse Christians of all kinds of conspiracy against King and country or even read about the burning of churches as well as other religions houses of worships?

But then, he claims to be some sexy terrier of BHM so he would have read about the concerns of Christians of being made scapegoats from starting illegal gatherings to causing disunity among a race and its religion!

Unless his BHM only blogs about holy stuff and Jesus said this or that.

They say if you live inside a nutshell, your world in confined to that space and you are blind to what is happening outside this space. One wonders if that is how our brader Tony pratices his Christianity. Me and God and the outside world does not exists.

But didn't Jesus preach about love thy neighbour and all that?

Perhaps brader Tony can teach us sinful Christians like yours truly what a real Christian is by practicing selfless and forgiveness as Jesus commands. In which case he would have found abundance of love and forgiveness towards her sister Julian too right? instead of asking the police to lock up the unChristian thinking Christian she is huh?

This is the sad reality of Christians in BolehLand where they have always been such good Christians bowing in humble submission when their religious freedom and institutions are slowly being chiselled away, no?

Brader Tony may know his Church history and know what persecution is about. But he is a poor student of Church history in BolehLand. Perhaps to him he sees persecution as those that early Christians faced and until he experiences it first hand such as being crucified or burnt on the stake, which is already too late, his conviction that there is no persecution is as strong as his observation of his religious rituals and duties to Jesus.

Perhaps our brader Tony doesn't know what a Christian is and how he should live his life as Jesus has commanded to His followers.

Perhaps he has an agenda by choosing to be blind when there are those who falsely accuse Christians of converting Malays, of scheming conspiracies and plots against King, a race, the BN party and government, of being insensitive in obeying man's law on the name his God should be called, or Bibles seized and acts of sacrilege done to the Holy Book. Or even those who are caught with partners secretly converting and tearing families apart.

To him the above may just be discrimination rather than persecution per se if he likens its definition to his understanding of persecutions is what early Christian faced.

Is he waiting for a Christian to be fed to the lions or stoned to death so to speak, that he will finally believe that there is persecution against Christians or other religions too?

Either brader Tony is a devout Christian whose life is only a (selfish) direct connection between him and his Maker and very blessed by the government giving him all the freedom to enter the kingdom of Heaven. He may really have a clean like 'bersih' heart compared to the dirty thinking and 'kotor' agenda of Julian, no? Or, he is blind to the cares of the world, or he has his own odd agenda in believing noone is interfering or disturbing him from worshipping his God, huh?

Is he mocking Christians and God in his police report or he is one of those living saints who has not faced any form of persecution when he carries out his evangelical work huh? He isn't a good Christian if he has not carried out Jesus' command to spread the good news too. How many people has he converted to accept Jesus huh?

So do tell us brader Tony about your evangelical work in BolehLand to all races by blogging about it then. You will surely earn a higher place in heaven and on earth also get many followers including this sinner Christian blogger, who will not hesitate to also file a police report against sister Julian's thinking too, huh?

Perhaps his Good News, in the English Language that is, has a large chunk of pages missing on things like 'Love thy neighbour', 'Not everyone who calls Lord Lord will enter the Kingdom of Heaven but he who does the Will of God, or 'For I was hungry, thirsty and so on...huh?

He may have been reading only the parts that say 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector... or assistant to a non Christian non Malay Chief Minister... and ... I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get as well as help put away those who commit religious sedition..."

If our Christian blogger is truly one who believes there is no persecution or discrimination against other religions in BolehLand, the Catholic Church, the Christian Federation and InterFaith Council have much to fear. They will be his next targets to file police reports for daring to issue press statements condemning those who accuse Christians of conspiracy against Jesus, the King and country, yes?
Why take on a blogger who happens to work for the Chief Minister of Penang and not the other non Muslim organisations then? Is it that our Christian is a blind bloke Christian who has his own more than one agenda together with his other blockheads blokes in the same house having such similar other agendas too, huh?

So while brader Tony is in the company of the taxmen of BolehLand, this sinner chooses to stand a distant, a very far distant away from brader Tony and dare not even look up to heaven. All I can whisper to God is to forgive me a sinner as I beat my heart as an act of contrition for not being brave enough to stand up for God. And I also ask sister Julian to follow the same agenda as my action before God too and I am sure she would not think twice about it but will not hesitate to join me and the rest of us to whisper in humility, 'God, have mercy on me and us, a sinner.. and I seek strength from God to be ready to join others to defend You.'

I go to zzzzz now. Bye-bye.
YAHMEH!!!

MBA Bloggers attended EC's Luncheon Talk hosted by INMINDS.

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 11:34 AM PDT

On Thursday the 30th of June, 2011, 4 members of The Muslim Bloggers Alliance attended the Luncheon Talk by the Elections Commission, hosted by INMINDS, a local think tank.
Myself, Hajjah Puteri Kamaliah Megat Abu Bakar @ Kata Kama, Tuan Haji Maarof Kassim @ Once a Sdarian and our newly registered member Tuan ACP Osman Abu Bakar (Rtd) @ Obee-Mancuso were among the early birds at the event which was held at the Seri Pacific Hotel's Ballroom besides PWTC, KL.

Tuan Osman is the brother of our nation's football heroes, Allahyarham Isa Bakar and Penang State's former skipper Ali Bakar. He is an avid Facebooker and just started blogging recently on my request. He has loads of stories to tell having served in our nation's Royal Malaysian Police Force and traveled to various countries in his line of duty.

Hajjah Puteri Kamaliah Megat Abu Bakar is a former NST Journalist. Her style of writing is very witty and straight from her heart. She claims to now being a 'Makcik Blogger'. Hehehehe.

Tuan Haji Maarof Kassim is a government retiree and hails from Seremban. He wrote about the event here at his blog. You can check out what he has to share there.

As I said earlier, we were among the early birds and the ballroom wasn't that full when we arrived. Later on, it was filled to the brim and the media turned out in full force. Pity that the event wasn't broadcasted live to the entire nation. Such an important explanation by the EC @ SPR should have been telecast live.

It concerns the safety and wellbeing of the nation with regard to the upcoming massive protest being planned by the rabblerousers of this country under pretext of marching to demand a cleaner election?

I think that our election process is clean enough. If it was otherwise, the Opposition Pact wouldn't have managed to take over 5 states of the Malaysian Peninsular! Only problem causing ingrates would claim that our EC is still tainted when they are lording it over the 4 states now under their rule.

I asked the EC Deputy Chairman as to why the Opposition Pact are allowed to call themselves as the 'Pakatan Rakyat' when in actuality not the entire civilian population have made a pact to be with the Opposition?
He answered that the Opposition have yet to apply to register their 'loose coalition' thus the authorities can't do nothing much to stop them.

I will be writing a brief summary about what took place during the event and share with you more in the next article.

Insya Allah.

I think Anwar himself knows his days are numbered. He may probably be intimating to friends saying goodbye. Aku nak habaq selamat tinggai kat hampa semua. And the friends may have retorted jokingly by saying- lain kali hang nak bantai cina mana, hang panggil kita semua.

Here is the problem though. Anwar behind bars is as much a problem as he is outside. It will still cause BN so many seats. So the question how do we deal with Anwar?

Anwar's good fortune is brought about by the incompetence of UMNO. It messed up the video clip issue by way of mishandling it. It shouldn't have given a semblance of involvement or relationship with the video.

We should have let this Eskay chap do it by himself. But the UMNO president felt compelled to meet up with Rahim Tamby Chik and Shuib Lazim, thereby giving the impression that UMNO is involved. UMNO has implied knowledge about it then, if not direct.

UMNO multiplied its stupidity by releasing clips involving Mat Sabu and the latest about Johari. Who are the ignoramuses surrounding the UMNO president?

The proximity of sequential releases of the clips would now suggest that only an organization with sufficient clout and resources can muster all the sideshows. All 10 fingers point toward UMNO. If we put up both up our legs or spread-eagle them, all 20 fingers point towards UMNO.

How do we deal with Anwar? It's not about doing something to save UMNO. It's about doing something to save the country. Anwar and all interested parties have to think about placing the country in capable hands now.

The irony is, the answer in dealing with Anwar for the purpose of saving the country lies with Anwar. Unfortunately, Anwar has no place in the equation for now at least. The best solution is for him to give up the de-facto leadership of the opposition in preference to someone else with the respectable clout.

I have written some time ago, and I wasn't joking about it, perhaps the best way for Anwar to hasten the downfall of the BN government is to allow himself to be jailed. Then the government will fall and if he is jailed before the downfall, he will be out in no time.

By mid-July Anwar will know his fate. Judging from the case being built up against him, he is likely to be the government's special guest. Special guest is the title of the book once written by Aziz Ishak.

What will happen then? There will be a leadership vacuum in the opposition group. Anwar has been the unifying factor this far. He is a crowd puller but not necessarily a vote puller. If that happens, the opposition parties will have to look for a leadership material sufficiently credible and respectable to become the rallying point.

That person if one is around has to step up to assume the mantle of leadership to save this country from gross mismanagement, fraudulent management, corruption, widening income disparities, re organize institutions of governance, dispensing justice, stemming corruption and all that.

Who can that be?- Mohd.Ariff Sabri bin Hj. Abdul Aziz. Read the rest here.

Bersih rally a turning point for democracy

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 09:01 AM PDT

Amidst the frenzy of draconian measures to prevent the July 9 Bersih rally from taking place, many Malaysians have begun to wonder: Has Malaysia descended into a state of lawlessness?

No sooner had the home minister declared that wearing the yellow Bersih T-shirt was illegal, the Inspector General of Police upped the ante by announcing that even "shoes, cars, buses or any medium that promote the Bersih rally are illegal, as this amounts to sedition", and he said the people involved will be arrested.

To date, more than a hundred people have been arrested all over the country in the past four days, mainly for wearing the yellow Bersih shirts.

To me, this sounds like someone speaking and acting as if he is the absolute monarch who can order the arrest of anyone at his whim, and whose word is law.

For nowhere in Malaysian law can you find a provision that allows a minister or a police officer to declare an item such as the Bersih shirt illegal or to arrest someone before a crime is committed or suspected to have been committed.

The Bersih rally has not even been held, so how can a crime be committed in connection with the rally?

Bersih above board

So, what has driven the minister and the IGP into such extreme conduct of resorting to brazenly unlawful exercise of power?

Is Bersih a terrorist organization that plots to overthrow the government by violence? Is Bersih calling people to break laws and create chaos? What terrible deeds has Bersih done to cause such phobia in the authorities that they should strike at everything that moves, so to speak, that smells of Bersih?

Bersih is a civil society movement participated by sixty two non-government organizations to campaign for electoral reforms.

And the July 9 rally is specifically called to address the problem of tNONEhe authorities' recalcitrance to institute any form of reform.

Despite persistent requests over many years, the Election Commission and the incumbent ruling coalition Barisan Nasional have not moved even an inch towards reforming an electoral system that has been reduced to a complete farce through ever escalating vote-buying, abuse of power and massive rigging.

With such noble intention, how could Bersih be branded as anything other than a respectable body that works towards restoration of democracy and return of political power to the people?

It should be obvious by now that without free and fair election, political power is vested in a few incumbent leaders, not with the people.

And when such a respectable body calls for a rally to highlight its cause to the nation, how can such a rally be taboo, and everything connected with it be decreed illegal?

Up to now, the incumbent hegemon Umno and the police have not come up with an iota of credible evidence that the Bersih rally is anything but a peaceful and honourable gathering, called in accordance with the right endowed by the Constitution to every citizen.

Regrettably, the police have so far conducted themselves as a force serving Umno's parochial political interests, in direct confrontation with the interests of the masses.

The excuses given so far to justify arrest and to label the rally illegal are laughable and carry no credibility – accusations such as a communist plot to wage war against the Agong, a movement aided by foreign Christian bodies to subvert the country, an event that will jeopardize public order and national security, and cause economic damage.

Authorities' excuses incredulous

These tales of impending threats and calamities are so far-fetched that they are not only disbelieved by decent Malaysians, but also reflect the paucity of rationale of the incumbent power to justify their condemnation and clampdown on the movement.

NONEThat their excuses to crucify the Bersih rally are rubbish is amply manifested in the admirable political and economic well being of those democratic countries where such peaceful rallies are part and parcel of their democratic way of life.

Look at our regional neighbor Hong Kong. Rallies of a few hundred thousand people to demonstrate against the Hong Kong or Chinese government are routinely staged there, and yet there was not the slightest indication that public order was affected or businesses harmed.

On the contrary, Hong Kong continues to enjoy ever increasing prosperity and stability.

So, what is Umno afraid of?

The honest truth and the bottom line is: Umno has no confidence to politically survive a free and fair election.

That is why it has not yielded an inch in the direction of moving Malaysian election to a more level-playing field, and it has no intention of doing so in the future.

Umno also realizes that it has committed too many wrongs that betrayed the people's interest, and more people have come to know of these through the fast growing alternative media.

Combined with the growing influence of opposition alliance Pakatan Rakyat, the coming rally could be a powerful demonstration of the people's will to reclaim sovereignty from the long-reigning kleptocracy through electoral reforms.

That is something that Umno does not want to see happening.

No win for Umno

We can hence expect that Umno will continue to step up pressure against Bersih by manipulating compliant institutions such as police and judiciary, at the expense of the Constitution and the law, to stifle the Bersih move.

But Umno is in a no-win situation. To be faithful to the Constitution which means that the peaceful rally must be allowed to proceed, Umno dreads to see a mammoth assembly that could be demoralizing to its dwindling supporters.

On the other hand, a brutal repression that breaks all laws may kindle public fury to an explosive state with unpredictable consequences.

Even if it succeeds in suppressing the rally, it can only bring temporary relief to Umno, as the ugly scenes of unjustified cruelty and transgression of law and fundamental human rights will be mercilessly bared for all to see, thanks to modern IT technology, reminiscent of the Tahrir square in Cairo, Egypt, uprising and the subsequent revolutionary fire that has spread across the entire Arab world.
By that time, Umno and BN's popular support may have so dwindled that even the status quo of skewed election and stooge institutions cannot save it from an electoral defeat.

I am confident that the majority of Malaysians have already reached such a level of political consciousness that the will of the people will prevail to make the July 9 rally an important turning point in our struggle to reclaim democracy and sovereignty for the people.

Emergency – the BN’s final frontier and what happens next

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 09:00 AM PDT

It is without doubt that our beloved homeland Malaysia has come to a crossroad. Recent events have lent that eerie feeling that something big is about to happen soon. Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim has warned that Emergency rule may be an option to deter the Bersih Rally, and used by Prime Minister Najib Razak's BN government as an excuse to clamp down on the Pakatan Rakyat opposition front.

Incredulously, Bersih, which means clean, is now a dirty word. Yellow is worn at your own peril. The authorities are clamping down hard on Bersih organizers, while participants in Bersih road-shows are slapped with ridiculous charges that border on the insane. More than 100 activists and supporters have been arrested, including foreigners. Daily reports in the mainstream media talks about a foreign plot to topple a democratically elected government. Alleged Christian funding by foreign NGO's are splashed in the daily news.

The Government of Malaysia has warned Malaysians of a grave Communist plot by 30 PSM supporters mostly of Indian descent. MIC, PPP, HRP and Hindraf are very quiet and see no reason to involve them-selves in this matter, which involves mostly PSM Indians. 12 lawyers representing the PSM supporters are unable to quash a further remand order against them. The presiding judge has warned of the serious charges involved before extending their remand, which includes waging a war against the King.

Prior to this, there was also an alleged conspiracy by the minority Christians to take over the country and to install a Christian Prime Minister. NGOs like Perkasa and Pembela lost no time to condemn the alleged plot and vowed a bloody crusade against the Christian community, which shocked the nation. Perkasa went on to warn the Chinese to stock up on food supplies during the July 9 Bersih Rally, as anything could happen.

There is now concerted effort to frighten the non-Malays from joining the Rally with veiled threats of bloodshed. If Malaysians of all races were to stand united on that fateful day, it could spell a very bad omen for the ruling elite.

The BN government, realizing that Bersih activists aren't going to budge, has left it to the Police to make the ultimate decision whether to impose Emergency rule or not. Although it was the government which was totally against the planned Rally, it has decided to wash its hand by giving PDRM executive powers to contain the threat.

Yes, it is now left to our not-too-bright PDRM to decide whether or not to invoke Emergency laws that can strangle the lifeblood of this nation. Imagine the sheer irresponsibility of our Prime Minister. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. But not him or the other BN leaders. BN is only interested to sell out the nation in its desperate bid to cling on to power. They don't care about anything else.

What will happen next – the Gory news reports

In a while, over the next few days, the mainstream media will be splashing out gory news reports about what havoc Emergency rule will create for Malaysia. They will exaggerate and it is actually due to this exaggeration that our country will be harmed, more than anything else.

Because after so many tries to provoke violence, the various races have kept calm. To the great frustration of the BN! Now, this is their final thrust.  And this is what they will say through their mainstream media.

With individual freedoms sharply curtailed, Malaysians will be asked to imagine a total police state, where the Police and Military have the power to arrest anyone suspected of being a threat to national security. There will be Police and Army blocks every 2 kilometers on the road. Everyone will be stopped and searched. Anyone who tries to raise his voice or object can be arrested on the spot.

There may be total chaos as people's movement will be restricted. Businesses will have to close shop and most entertainment outlets will be affected. Curfew will set in and no one would be allowed on the streets after 6 pm. There may be house-to-house searches to flush out dissidents, and the ISA may be used to silence detractors from trying to plan a revolt. Everyone may have to stay in from dusk till dawn seriously impacting all businesses, which can go bankrupt – even though all in just one day!

Foreign expatriates will flee never to return while the 500,000 legal Bangladeshi workers will be hard pressed to find work. They will start looking at Malaysian women and girls. Our homes, never safe in the first place, will be even more damgerous.

With individual freedom curtailed, there will be the unfortunate ones arrested. Many will be tortured and some will mysteriously disappear for good. It probably will be a 'living hell' on earth. It will also impact our economy seriously, as the world starts to take notice and impose an economic blockade on the country. Such an economic toll will surely cripple the country and precipitate the 2019 bankruptcy, already predicted by Najib's advisers.

If the Emergency persists for more than three months, it will spell the end of our economic advantage, and set us back another 50 years. Emergency Laws will be enacted that will supersede our current laws which will spell the end of democracy. No doubt, there will be racial clashes such as the May 13, as rabble rousers direct their anger at the minority races in the country. Looting and pillage may seem quite possible in such a scenario.

And at the end of the emergency, what's left of our beloved homeland will be a ghastly sight of smoke ruined buildings, smashed up vehicles, filth covered roads, dead animal carcasses as we emerge shell shocked to scan the horribly scarred landscape which was once our homeland.

Miscalculation

Reminds us of the books we used to read in our teens about Solzhenitsyn's Russia, the Cold War, China's Gang of Four – so scary. But its also just like in Tunisia and Libya recently. And long before that, in US, France, Russia, China and many other countries in the world.

Anyway, no need to break out in cold sweat as this is what the BN is painting. It is what they want Malaysians to imagine and to Fear. For the purpose of pressuring the Bersih and PAS, PKR and DAP to back off. So that Najib and BN can declare victory.

Remember the UMNO elite is beyond redemption, they don't care about the people, they just want to preserve the wealth they have carted overseas and pre-empt any any attempt to make them return the people's wealth like the Thaksins, the Marcoses, the Suhartoes and so on.

But despite the MSM's hyperactive imagination, it won't happen in Malaysia because the people here have been smartened by 5 decades of overly blatant mental manipulation. And the truth is – the racial animosity and deep-seated hatred towards one another does not really prevail, it exists largely in the Perkasa and Mahathir circles. Otherwise, PAS – the second largest Malay party – would have merged with UMNO by now.

Baptism of Fire but not a bust-up

Whether on July 9 or another date, Malaysians cannot escape a baptism of Fire. The nation is transforming itself into a democracy. But as long as the UMNO elite are in power, they won't allow it. And this sets the stage for a big standoff. But very likely, our prediction is that of a dragged-out but safe landing rather than the bust-up that Najib and BN are threatening.

Beacuse at the end of the day, what is he actually implying when he says Emergency rule is up to the police? Our PM Najib is actually telling Malaysians that BN will not leave without bloodshed. Imagine the gall!

Malaysia does not belong to the UMNO elite, nor to the BN. It belongs to Malaysians. It is not up to Pakatan either, or PAS or DAP or PKR but Malaysians themselves. The real and burning question is  – are Malaysians willing to put up with such a corrupt BN regime and for how long more? The answer is really interesting and will become clear soon.

So lie low, and show your true colors on that Momentous day. But er…forget about yellow underwear, as no one is going to make you squat. Really, let the bullies do their worst. You know what they say about bullies right – face up to them and they will rush off faster than… Rosmah...apparently she was a track queen in her youth!

Now, more than ever, fellow Malaysians, SALAM BERSIH! - Malaysia Chronicle

Hindraf and Bersih: Last chance to unite

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Perhaps, if the Hindraf movement will not join the rally, then hopefully, individual Hindraf members will participate in their personal capacities.

One name stands out in the Bersih 2.0 rally: Hindraf. In a communiqué issued on June 15, Hindraf leader P Uthayakumar said that Hindraf would not participate in the march because Pakatan Rakyat had reneged on its promise to Hindraf after the 2008 general election.

Uthayakumar said, "We are not participating because Pakatan failed to endorse our 18-point demand made in 2007."

Might Hindraf be persuaded to reconsider its earlier decision to stay away?

When would we be given another golden opportunity to show unity among the various communities in Malaysia? In another 54 years perhaps?

People of various ages, faiths, races and backgrounds would be coming together on July 9 in a show of strength.

The message to the Barisan Nasional-led coalition is that we would not tolerate lip service anymore, that electoral reforms are necessary and that human rights abuses cannot be ignored.

It is also a deliberate snub to the Election Commission because its offer to talk and engage with us has only come at the last minute.

Back in 2007, the first Bersih march on Nov 10 and the subsequent Hindraf rally on Nov 25 were instrumental in forcing a change in people's attitude towards BN.

There is no denying that Hindraf's leaders were successful in galvanising the movement to stand behind Pakatan. Also without the support of the Hindraf movement, whose members turned out in the tens of thousands, the outcome of the 2008 general election might have been different.

These two marches in 2007 contributed towards the significant opposition gains in the 2008 polls.

Using the element of fear

It is obvious that all the parties and individuals who are opposed to the "Walk for Democracy" are using the fear element to cow the public into staying at home.

Fear is what makes Umno-BN and its cronies try their best to stop the march because a mobilised rakyat demanding urgent democratic and electoral reforms is a dangerous beast.

Fear is what drove MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek to warn his party members against joining the march, saying that it was politically motivated and illegal: "We cannot accept the objective of this illegal rally."

Fear and shame drove the EC deputy chairman Wan Ahmad Wan Omar to declare that Bersih was merely a front for Pakatan to increase its bid for Putrajaya.

He said, "There was (a 2007) demonstration and as result, a momentum was built and in the 2008 election (the opposition) won big… now, the rumour is that snap polls will be called and history will be repeated.

"(They think) let us have Bersih 2.0 with more supporters, the momentum will grow and possibly win Putrajaya."

Wan Ahmad told S Ambiga, the Bersih chairman, to be apolitical: "If Bersih separates itself from political parties, then we can meet Bersih as a member of civil society as its agenda is for the good of all."

However, Wan Ahmad forgets that if he had not been a lame chairman of the EC and discharged his duties professionally, then Malaysia might not have been lumped into such a quagmire.

In another attempt to blacken the Bersih organisers, Umno sympathisers have said that the EC was efficient, that elections in Malaysia were fair, otherwise, the opposition would not have been able to win five states in the last general election.

Have these people considered that if the elections had been truly clean, fair and free, and the EC did not collude with Umno, the opposition might not have won just five states but would have scored outright victories throughout Malaysia?

Last February, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak claimed that Hindraf did not need to represent the Indian community because the government was capable of looking after the interests of the Indians.

He said, "We have taken action on the question of Indian community interests, meaning that they don't need Hindraf, they only need BN."

After 54 years of BN, what improvements in living standards or educational and work opportunities have the Indians to show for BN's supposed concern?

Time to be magnanimous

But BN alone is not to blame; Uthayakumar of Hindraf is still seething from being let down by Pakatan after the 2008 general election.

True. It is frustrating and a serious point of grievance.

Hindraf leaders have striven so hard for the Indians but have achieved very little because they have been let down by politicians. They have been used, as every political party uses us, the rakyat, for their own means and to fulfil their own agendas.

There are almost 850,000 Indian voters, yet there is not a single constituency with an Indian majority.

In 2007, Hindraf was said to be linked with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam but none of the politicians or any social activist defended Hindraf.

Hindraf was accused of having overseas links and plots to overthrow the government but again no one spoke up for them. When Hindraf's Orange T-shirts were banned because they threatened national security, or when Hindraf's supporters' children were arrested, again no one came to their defence.

When Hindraf organised a demonstration against racism in February, no opposition politician supported them.

When hundreds of Hindraf supporters were arrested and 54 were charged in court, one Hindraf supporter commented: "Not a single word from civil societies. Their silence is deafening."

Perhaps Pakatan's arrogance has cost them dearly. Equally, is Hindraf cutting off its nose, despite its face?

We respect Hindraf's decision to stay away, but this is not Pakatan's march. This march is also not a misguided attempt to overthrow the government or cause civil unrest.

The July 9 rally is possibly the rakyat's last chance to make a difference, to set aside political and personal differences and to stand as one against those who make a mockery of democracy and clean elections.

Many of us are angry with politicians, from both sides of the political divide. They make use of us when it suits them. Then they spit us out like orange pips after they have sucked all the juicy orange segments.

What would it take for more Malays to speak up? Liberal-minded Malays can collectively make a difference.

One Hindraf supporter who would be joining the rally said, "Human rights do not belong to the privileged few."

Perhaps, if the Hindraf movement would not join the rally, then hopefully, individual Hindraf members would participate in their personal capacities.

There is a Tamil saying, "It does not matter whether its Rama or Ravana who reigns as it wouldn't make a difference to me."

So has Umno-BN already won, if we cannot even join hands in a common cause? It is never too late for Hindraf to join the Bersih rally to show solidarity against Umno-BN.

Now is the time to be magnanimous and to set aside petty squabbles. Hindraf has more to gain but the real champions would be the rakyat.
